Having a backtrack virtual machine can help you in many ways. You can use this machine for penetration testing and other stuff. So this article will tell you how you can do this with you can create backtrack virtual machine.
I hope that you already have installed VirtualBox and if you don't have installed then I already have uploaded a video to show you how to install VirtualBox.
So, start VirtualBox, if you are using Windows machine, then you will find that in your start menu or start screen in windows 8. In Ubuntu you can press the super(windows) button and then you can search for VirtualBox, then you will see a small virtual box icon, click on it and you will have the VirtualBox window shown on your screen.
After starting Virtual Box, first step is to create a virtual machine, you can do this by clicking on the new button. After clicking on new button, you need to enter than name of the virtual machine. You can enter Backtrack in the name field. After entering this you need to change the type of the operating system to Linux.
If you wish to install 64 bit backtrack then choose Ubuntu 64-bit otherwise choose Ubuntu 32-bit. Backtrack is based on Ubuntu, so you will not face any problem. Now you can click on next.
After doing this, you need to specify the memory size of your virtual machine, 512 Mb is enough for backtrack to run but, y\if you have more ram then you can go for 1GB.
After clicking on next, you need to specify the type of the virtual disk, You can choose any file type you want, but, I personally like to have .VHD file type because it is very easy to edit them with a Windows machine. SO choose .VHD file type and then click on next
Specify the hard disk type as fixed and click on next. It is not recommended to use dynamic allocation, sometimes it causes errors.
After clicking on next, you need to specify file allocation size, choose any size that is suitable for you but remember that it must be greater than 8Gb to use full power of your backtrack system.
Click on create and your virtual machine will get created.
Now your virtual machine is created, now its time to install backtrack on it. For this, you need backtrack live cd. You can download backtrack live CD from this URL
Next step is to make your backtrack machine bootable with live cd, for doing this you need to add backtrac cd image in the storage tree, have a look at the screenshot given above that will tell you how to do this. You need to change the settings of your virtual machine to make it backtrack bootable.
Now start your virtual machine and you will see backtrack live running inside virtual machine.
After few seconds, you will see a login screen like the screenshot give below. type startx and then press enter, then you will see backtrack desktop on your screen.
backtrack live is running now, its time to install it on your virtual hard drive.
You will see a small install backtrack icon, click on this and backtrack installation process will start up.
backtrack is installing now, It takes some time to install. During installation process, installation wizard will ask you few common questions about your installation. Answer them and click on forward.
It can take some time to install backtrack depending on your hardware.
Now restart virtual machine. by clicking on restart button.
After restarting you will have backtrack installed on your virtual machine.
Now You are ready to go on a hacking trip !
